6 Exotic Ideas for Your Next Event

Event planning doesn’t have to be boring.

Too often, party planners feel they must “play it safe” — not tread too far outside the box of tried and true event planning. Set up a simple tent. Line up the tables and chairs in a neat order. Place the emcee and a small dance floor near one end. Bam! You think you have an instant party. But what if…

“What if no one comes? What if people don’t enjoy the party? What if they don’t like the food? Or don’t like me?”

The hamster wheel in your head runs at full speed when it comes to throwing a party. After all, event planning is an anxiety-riddled task at best, a terrifying nightmare at worst. So maybe it’s better to just play it safe and do what’s been done before. Don’t take any chances. Follow the imagined “rule book of event planning.” Or not.

Step Outside the Box

In fact, guests love to be surprised. People want to experience new things. That includes new and interesting parties they can talk about, even brag about. So tell the hamster to take a nap and go for the dramatic, the unusual, the daring — in other words, throw a memorable event with these exotic ideas for your event planning agenda:

1. Class It Up

Imagine your friends’ surprise when they walk underneath your tent to find an exquisite array of low-lit luxuries. Hang lightweight chandeliers from the posts in the top of the tent. Drape the tables with heavy tablecloths. Set the tables with crystal, china and real silverware.

2. Personal Parties

Instead of squeezing everyone into one big tent, consider renting a dozen or more smaller tents, Leave off side curtains and each small party actually becomes part of the bigger party. Set intimate lighting in each tent, which will stand out nicely during an evening event.

3. On the Airy Side

Surprise your guests with a tent full of helium-filled balloons. Instead of tying the balloons to chairs, let the balloons float to the ceiling of the tent and stir magically as the party goes on. Tie ribbons on the balloons so guests can take them as they leave.

4. Just Lounging Around

Bring in long, sleek sofas, recliners and chaises. Set coffee tables and cubes in front of various seating groups and let the mingling begin. There is no rule book that says you have to have tables and chairs under your tent. True creative event planning opens many different doors.

5. Open Sesame

Why not add a fun element to your outdoor tent party by setting up a few real doors. Stabilize the doors and allow them to swing open and closed or just stand them up inside the tent as décor. Tweak guests’ curiosity by placing Do Not Enter signs on the doors or little pictures of men and women.

6. Outside Inside Out

In the Carolinas, on a warm summer day kissed by cool mountain breezes, no one wants to be inside. So maintain the outdoorsy ambiance by decorating the tent with hanging ferns and potted trees, swag vines, green garlands and flowers everywhere.
