End of Summer Party Ideas

Planning a party can be more work than people realize. If you are known as the curator among family and friends, you know this. On the other hand, you get all the special satisfaction from devising party ideas and planning a fun, well-attended party.

The end of summer can be a bittersweet time of transition:

  • The kids are heading back to school

  • Tourist season is (kind of) ending

  • Cool weather is around the corner

For many people, it’s back to the regular grind of everyday life. In other words, it’s a great time to throw a huge bash that leaves people feeling like they got the most out of summer. Here are some party ideas to do just that.

Embrace the Heat

We’re not saying you should open a sweat lodge, but keep in mind that in a few months many of your friends will be lamenting the cold weather. Provide plenty of cool, shaded areas at your party, such as under a tent, but set some things up in the sunlight, too. Your guests will appreciate such party ideas as lawn chairs, an outdoor game, room for kids to run around and places to soak up the sun.

Give your guests a variety of ways to cool off too. This might be the last time this year to serve chilled, summery drinks. Watermelon smoothies, mint juleps, fruit-infused water, and mojitos can make all-star appearances here.

Depending on the crowd, you might want to have some water-based activities available. Hosting a pool party gives guests a place to cool off, play games, and socialize. Providing features like a slip n’ slide or water guns can keep the mood light and help everyone stay cool one last time before the temperatures dip.

Don’t Be So Serious

For many people, the end of summer can feel like the last hurrah before returning to reality. For this reason, give your guests lots of fun activities to try. It’s not that formal is bad, but you might be surprised by how many otherwise serious friends and family members want to cut loose.

Let them bust a move on the dance floor, sing karaoke, or go on a scavenger hunt. You could even include an auction, a piñata or a matchmaking type of game. Set up horseshoes or arrange for a three-legged race and apple dunking contests. Blend classiness with a “lettin’ loose” atmosphere for a really memorable party.

Only the Best Party Ideas

Obviously, you have budget limitations. But it’s a good time to go all out, especially if you won’t be having another event for some time. Set the mood with decorations. If you have the event catered, use a company whose food you personally love. If you’re getting a band or DJ, get one that puts on a great show. If you’re getting a comedian, hire one who won’t offend anyone, but who will still put everyone in stitches.

Your party should stimulate each of your guests, from the food and entertainment to the activities and design. And if you hold a blockbuster at the end of summer, people will remember it until next summer, when you’ll have the pressure on to top this year’s big bash.
